The anatomy of a cryptic clue

A calm way to spot definition, wordplay, and the small signals that connect them.

01

Two routes to one answer

A fair cryptic clue gives two independent routes to the same answer. One is the definition, usually at the beginning or the end. The other is wordplay: an instruction that assembles, changes, hides, or reorders letters. Try **“Flower beside river (4)”**. _Flower_ can be the definition, because something that flowers can be a BANK (a river bank is the other reading). The clue is a double definition, and the short surface makes the two meanings easy to miss.

02

Read the grammar

The surface sentence is deliberately distracting. Look for a grammatical hinge: a word that could be a definition but also an instruction. Enumeration is part of the grammar too. `(3,4)` wants two words, while `(5)` wants five letters.

03

Build a shortlist

Write down a possible definition and list the mechanisms the remaining words could indicate. If the answer fits only one half, keep it in pencil. The best answer explains every significant word and matches the enumeration and checked letters.
